Stylistic Analysis of Bach’s Speech at the Opening Ceremony of Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022

Abstract
This paper uses both qualitative and quantitativemethods to analyze the speech of Thomas Bach, the president ofthe International Olympic Committee (IOC), at the openingceremony of Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 in threeaspects: vocabulary, syntax, and rhetorical devices. Bycalculating word frequency and sentence length according tothe tape script of this speech, the result shows that the languageis inspiring with many short and simple sentences. Bach is goodat using declarative and exclamatory sentences, flexible use ofpersonal pronouns and rhetorical devices, and his language isvivid and imaginative, which can inspire athletes and peoplearound the world to face challenges in a new year. Throughdiscourse analysis, we can better understand the spirit andmeaning conveyed by speeches at international gatherings.
