Abstract—Vocabulary capacity is a fundamental component of language proficiency, serving as the cornerstone for accurate and fluent language use. However, English learners often face significant challenges in vocabulary acquisition, including low memory efficiency and high rates of forgetting. To address these issues, this study investigates the characteristics and preferences of college students in using vocabulary acquisition applications (APPs) through an online questionnaire. By analyzing the operational mechanisms of these APPs through the lens of psycholinguistic memory theories, the research aims to uncover how these tools can enhance vocabulary retention and learning efficiency. The study focuses on popular APPs’ strengths and weaknesses in facilitating vocabulary acquisition and reveals these APPs leverage psycholinguistic principles. And the practical implications are concluded, suggesting that educators can harness the advantages of these APPs to enhance students’ vocabulary learning outcomes. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on Mobile-assisted Language Learning (MALL) and provides valuable insights for both educators and app developers in optimizing vocabulary learning tools.
