Abstract

This study concerns the comparative analysis of epistemic stance adverbs used by Chinese and English native researchers in their academic writings within the field of linguistics. By constructing two small corpora consisting of equal numbers of English academic essays written by Chinese and English native authors, the paper investigates the frequency and usage features of these adverbial markers across different groups. The study aims to shed light on how non-native English writers can effectively convey their stance in academic contexts, offering suggestions for improving their use of epistemic stance adverbs.
